Background information:
This model is based on the oldest house of Edam. Centuries ago (circa 1530) built as a wooden house with a thatched roof. After a great fire, the city council found thatch too dangerous and gave premiums for those who took roof tiles. Another idea of the city council: expanding in stone (the stone room) and make it the heating/cooking area, so that there was no more open flames in the wooden part of the house.
Architectural details:
Initially built as one floor in wood frame construction with boards on it. Later, the rear half is replaced by a stone construction with two floors. Thereby changing the function of the wooden part from residential house to workshop. Because the corner house had no outdoor space (still doesn’t have a garden) the waterhole was placed indoors. Over the centuries, the building was considerably remodeled several times, among others in 1934 and 1980. Nowadays, the wooden part is completely renovated and used as residential house again. As is this model.
